Solomon Islands

A former Pacific British protectorate since the 1890s, the Solomon Islands became independent in 1978. Today, it is a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy (the British Crown) and is a part of the Commonwealth. The Solomon Islands has a mixed legal system of English common law and customary law.
Economically, the Solomon Islands depends on agriculture, fishing and forestry, while most manufactured goods and petroleum products must be imported. The islands are rich in undeveloped mineral resources such as lead, zinc, nickel and gold.
