Madagascar
Madagascar is an African island nation located on one of the largest islands on earth. Historically, Madagascar was a pirate stronghold during the late 17th and 18th centuries and served as a slave trading post into the 19th century. Occupied by the French in 1896, Madagascar gained its independence in 1960. Today, Madagascar is a semi-presidential republic with a civil law system based on the old French civil code and customary law in matters of marriage, family and obligation.
Madagascar is divided into 6 provinces in terms of administrative regions.
Economically, Madagascar is a mostly unregulated economy with many untapped natural resources. Agriculture, including fishing and forestry is the mainstay of its economy accounting for more than 1/4 of the GDP and employing roughly 80% of the population. More recently, exports of apparel boomed after gaining duty-free access to the U.S. market in 2000 under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, which was then terminated in Jan. 2010.
