New Zealand

The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand sometime between A.D. 1250 and 1300. In 1840, Maori chieftains entered into the Treaty of Waitangi with Great Britain, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. That same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907. Today, New Zealand is a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy with common law system, based on English model, with special legislation and land courts for the Maori.

New Zealand has 16 regions and 1 territory in terms of administrative regions.

Economically, New Zealand is a service-based economy with a level of industrialization in recent decades. Agriculture remains one of New Zealand's competitive edges in international trade.
