Panama

A former Central American Spanish colony, Panama broke with Spain in 1821 to join the Republic of Gran Colombia, from which it later seceded in 1903. Today, Panama is a presidential republic with a civil law system.

Panama has 10 provinces in terms of administrative regions.

Panama's dollar-based economy rests primarily on a well-developed services sector that accounts for more than 1/3 of its GDP. The Panama Canal built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914 and transferred to Panama control in 1977 is a critical infrastructure supporting the country's revenue and economic activities. Future growth will be bolstered by th Canal expansion project that began in 2007 and was completed in 2016 at a cost of $5.3 billion.
